What Comedians Study

Have you ever wondered what comedians study? It’s not like there is a University of Funny anywhere. How did they learn how to execute a killer performance or write an Emmy winning comedy? They must have studied something, right? So if they aren’t learning this from school, what are comedians studying?

There’s no graduation required for a comedian, but they should have a good knowledge of psychology and communication skills. Comedians keep up with trends, watch the latest comedy specials, and are no strangers to trial and error.

Joe Schmoe isn’t walking on a stage and delivering 20 to 30 mins of laugh out loud comedy on their first try. You can bet that an enormous amount of preparation and study went into the act beforehand.

In this article, I will show you what a comedian does study before going onstage for a performance.

  1. Psychology

Comedians are tuned into the psychology of a crowd. It enhances the level of predictability inside a person, due to their ability to analyze a situation with human beings. It is an essential tool for an artist who is going to deal with human emotions.

A comedian’s job is to make people laugh. Some comedians can do it quickly after going on stage due to their innate sense of ability and sense of humor. Some of them can do that due to their experience in that particular field. But all of these things will happen due to an unconscious reason behind it, which is human psychology.

Delivering a statement that can hurt somebody’s feelings is a substantial potential drawback of comedy. To reduce the risk of this, comedians need to study human psychology to understand the emotional state of mind of a human being.

  1. Communication

It is essential for people who deal with new faces regularly. A person with knowledge of communication can deal with any kind of situation in his life.

It requires knowledge about the barriers and factors of effective communication. This is the best tool to get involved if you are a person who is regularly dealing with people.

  1. Trends

A person who is trying to be a comedian should be understanding and should know the recent trends in social media, society, and the world. It will make it easier to get the content out from many resources.

Most comedians who try to give their best performances give their best to current situations and current affairs. They simply try to add some humor to it to make it funnier and desirable.

  1. Formatting and Structuring

As you have a great sense of humor, it doesn’t matter that you can go to any audience and create your image on to that audience.

It needs a fair amount of preparation and structuring. Structuring needs to be done precisely so that you can adequately deliver your content to the audience.

  1. Methods of Comedy

Some people have a lot of experience in comedy. You can search for the most significant comedians on earth, and you will get hundreds of names. Comedians study the techniques of other comedians, especially comedians who started years ago.

This is also a study topic for most comedians in the industry. This will give them a reference point to get to industry standards.

All the above suggestions are study topics that a comedian should study.
